Why Does Another Calculator Give Me a Different Number?

If you run the same batch through four edible calculators you will get four answers, sometimes 30% apart. That isn't one of them being broken — it's four different sets of hidden assumptions. There are only four things that actually move the number:

1. Whether decarb loss is modeled at all

Several popular calculators multiply grams × potency and stop. That's the theoretical maximum, not a home kitchen. Home decarb lands nearer 80–92% depending on method, and some THC degrades to CBN along the way. A calculator that skips this reads high.

2. Whether extraction loss is modeled at all

Not everything that survives decarb makes it into the butter. Open-pot stovetop is the leakiest (60–75%); a sealed machine or an ethanol tincture is the tightest (80–95%). Pick your method above and the range moves with it, instead of one hard-coded number standing in for all five.

3. Whether you typed THCA into a THC field

This is the quiet one. THCA sheds its carboxyl group when it converts, losing 12.3% of its mass — 20% THCA is about 17.5% THC even at perfect decarb. Most labs already publish an adjusted Total THC, but if your COA lists raw THCA and you paste that number in, you'll overshoot before any other factor applies. Set the label basis to THCA and we apply the 0.877 correction and say so.

4. Whether loss assumptions get applied to material that's already activated

This is where generic calculators do real damage. Distillate and RSO/FECO were decarbed during processing — charging them a decarb loss and an extraction loss understates the dose. An 800 mg labelled syringe should read about 800 mg, minus only what stays on the syringe. Pick RSO / FECO or Concentrate above and we skip both factors.

Our answer to all four: we show a range, never a single fake-precise number, and every factor we applied is listed under Show the math with the reason it was applied. If you disagree with an assumption, you can see it and adjust the inputs — you don't have to trust us.

Worked Example

Brownie batch, mason jar method

7 g flower at 20% Total THC → cannabutter (240 ml) → 2 tbsp in a 12-brownie recipe

Decarb 85–92% × extraction 70–85% = 0.60–0.78

Where to Find Your Numbers

Potency: On a dispensary label or COA. Average flower is 15–25% THC; CBD-dominant strains run 8–20% CBD. For RSO/FECO, label mg ÷ 10 gives the percentage — an 800 mg gram is 80%.

Carrier volume: The butter, oil or alcohol you infuse into, in ml. 1 cup ≈ 240 ml, 1 stick of butter ≈ 113 ml.

Beginner-safe mode: Shows the high band as the dose to plan around. If your batch came out average you'll have eaten less than expected — always recoverable. The opposite isn't. Sealed methods like a machine or an alcohol tincture narrow the band; an open pot widens it.
