LEVO Cannabutter Guide

6 min read

The LEVO 2 automates the entire cannabutter process — decarboxylation, infusion, and dispensing — in one countertop device. This guide walks through making cannabutter specifically with the LEVO 2, including exact settings, timing, and tips for best results. If you want to compare methods (stovetop, slow cooker, machine), see our full cannabutter guide.

What You Need

Use Unsalted Butter

Unsalted butter gives you a cleaner flavor and more control over the final taste. Salted butter works but can produce a slightly off flavor in baked goods.

Step-by-Step Process

  1. 01

    Grind your flower

Use a medium grind — not powder-fine. You want enough surface area for extraction without clogging the herb pod. A hand grinder works perfectly.

  2. 02

    Load the herb pod

Pack the ground cannabis loosely into the LEVO herb pod. Don't overfill — airflow matters for even extraction. The pod should be no more than ¾ full.

  3. 03

    Add butter to the reservoir

Place 1–2 cups of unsalted butter into the LEVO reservoir. The butter should fully submerge the bottom of the herb pod when inserted.

  4. 04

    Run the Activate (Decarb) cycle

Select the Activate cycle on the LEVO 2. Set temperature to 240°F and time to 30 minutes. This decarboxylates the THC-A into active THC. The LEVO app lets you monitor progress remotely.

  5. 05

    Run the Infuse cycle

After activation completes, select the Infuse cycle. Set temperature to 160°F and time to 1–2 hours. Lower temperatures preserve terpenes; longer times increase extraction. 2 hours at 160°F is the sweet spot for most batches.

  6. 06

    Dispense and store

Once infusion completes, use the LEVO's built-in dispensing valve to pour the butter directly into a mason jar or silicone mold. No cheesecloth needed — the herb pod already filters plant material. Refrigerate immediately.

Tips for Best Results

  • Don't skip the Dry cycle for fresh flower — If your cannabis isn't fully cured, run a 30-minute Dry cycle at 150°F first. This removes excess moisture that can make your butter foamy.
  • Don't overfill the herb pod — Airflow matters. A loosely packed pod extracts more efficiently than a tightly packed one.
  • The LEVO eliminates cheesecloth — The herb pod acts as a built-in filter. No straining needed.
  • Use the LEVO app to monitor — The app shows real-time temperature and remaining time. Useful if you're in another room.
  • Calculate your dose — Use our edible dosage calculator to determine the mg/serving of your finished butter before cooking with it.

Don't Exceed 240°F for THC Decarb

Higher temperatures degrade THC into CBN, which is sedating rather than psychoactive. Stick to 240°F for 30 minutes for optimal THC activation. For CBD, use 300°F for 60 minutes.

Troubleshooting

  • Butter tastes too "planty" — You likely infused too long or at too high a temperature. Try 160°F for 1 hour instead of 2. Also ensure your grind isn't too fine.
  • Butter is weak — Either your flower was low-potency or you didn't decarb long enough. Make sure the full 30-minute Activate cycle completes. Also check that your flower-to-butter ratio isn't too diluted.
  • Foamy or watery butter — Your flower had too much moisture. Use the Dry cycle first next time, or use properly cured flower.
  • LEVO won't reach temperature — Ensure the reservoir has enough butter to cover the heating element. An underfilled reservoir can cause temperature errors.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I use the LEVO C for cannabutter?+
The LEVO C does not have a built-in decarb (Activate) cycle. You would need to decarb your cannabis in the oven first (240°F for 40 minutes), then use the LEVO C for infusion only. For the full automated experience, the LEVO 2 or Lux is recommended.
How much cannabutter does the LEVO 2 make per batch?+
The LEVO 2 reservoir holds up to 16 oz (2 cups) of liquid. A typical batch uses 1–2 cups of butter with 3.5–7g of flower, yielding about 1–2 cups of finished cannabutter.
How long does LEVO cannabutter last?+
Stored in an airtight container in the refrigerator, LEVO cannabutter lasts 2–3 weeks. Frozen, it lasts 3–6 months. Always label with the date and estimated potency.
LEVO 2 vs oven/stovetop — is it worth it?+
The LEVO 2 is significantly more convenient — no babysitting, no straining, no mess. Temperature control is more consistent than an oven. The trade-off is smaller batch size (16 oz max) and the upfront cost (~$250). If you make cannabutter regularly, the convenience is worth it.
