Cannabis brownies are the most iconic edible for a reason — rich chocolate masks any cannabis taste, the recipe is forgiving, and cannabutter works as a direct substitute for regular butter. This is one of the best starter recipes for anyone new to cannabis cooking.

Ingredients

  • 1/2 cup (1 stick) cannabutter, melted
  • 1 cup granulated sugar (or cannabis sugar for extra potency)
  • 2 large eggs
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1/3 cup unsweetened cocoa powder
  • 1/2 cup all-purpose flour
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 1/4 teaspoon baking powder
Need cannabutter?

This recipe requires cannabutter as the active ingredient. See our complete cannabutter guide for stovetop, slow cooker, and machine methods.

Method

  1. 01

    Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C)

Line an 8×8 inch baking pan with parchment paper or grease with regular (non-infused) butter.

  2. 02

Melt cannabutter and combine with sugar

In a medium bowl, stir melted cannabutter and sugar until combined. The mixture should be smooth.

  3. 03

    Beat in eggs and vanilla

Add eggs one at a time, stirring well after each. Add vanilla and mix until smooth.

  4. 04

    Add dry ingredients

Sift in cocoa powder, flour, salt, and baking powder. Fold gently until just combined — don't overmix or the brownies will be tough.

  5. 05

    Pour into prepared pan

Spread batter evenly. Use a spatula to smooth the top. The batter should be about 1 inch thick.

  6. 06

    Bake for 25–30 minutes

Brownies are done when a toothpick inserted in the center comes out with a few moist crumbs (not wet batter). Underbaking slightly gives you fudgier brownies.

  7. 07

    Cool completely before cutting

Let cool in the pan for at least 30 minutes. Cut into 12–16 equal pieces for consistent dosing.

Dosage calculation

Use our dosage calculator to determine the total THC in your cannabutter. Then divide by the number of brownie pieces. Example: 1,120 mg total THC in 1/2 cup butter, cut into 16 brownies = ~70 mg per brownie. For beginners, aim for 5–10 mg per serving — you may need to use less cannabutter or cut into more pieces.

Dosage Tips

  • For lower doses: Mix cannabutter 50/50 with regular butter. Half cannabutter, half regular = half the potency per brownie.
  • Cut precisely: Use a ruler and sharp knife to cut equal portions. Uneven pieces mean uneven dosing.
  • Label your batch: Write the estimated mg per piece on the storage container. Include date and strain if known.

Storage

  • Room temperature: 3–5 days in an airtight container
  • Refrigerator: 1–2 weeks
  • Freezer: Up to 3 months — wrap individual pieces for grab-and-go dosing

Troubleshooting

  • Strong cannabis taste: Use dark cocoa powder and add an extra teaspoon of vanilla. The bitterness of dark chocolate masks cannabis flavor effectively.
  • Brownies are dry: Overbaked. Reduce bake time by 3–5 minutes next batch. Pull when the center is still slightly underdone.
  • Inconsistent potency: The cannabutter wasn't mixed thoroughly into the batter. Stir the melted cannabutter well before adding to sugar, and fold the batter evenly.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I use cannabis coconut oil instead of cannabutter?+
Yes — substitute 1:1. Cannabis coconut oil works well in brownies and adds a subtle coconut flavor. See our coconut oil guide for making it.
What's the best THC dose for brownie beginners?+
5–10 mg per piece is the standard beginner dose. Use our dosage calculator and adjust the cannabutter ratio to hit your target.
Can I add chocolate chips or nuts?+
Absolutely. Fold in up to 1/2 cup of chocolate chips, walnuts, or pecans after adding the dry ingredients. This doesn't affect potency.
How long until I feel the effects?+
Cannabis brownies are edibles — onset is typically 45–90 minutes. Don't eat more if you don't feel anything after 30 minutes. Wait the full 2 hours before considering a second dose.
