Infusion

Cannabis Honey

4 min read

Cannabis honey combines the medicinal properties of raw honey with the effects of cannabis for a versatile, shelf-stable infused sweetener. Perfect for infused teas, hot chocolate, and other drinks.

There are two approaches: direct infusion (simpler, less potent) and the tincture method (more potent, cleaner flavor).

Important chemistry note

Honey is not a fat — it's mostly sugar and water. Cannabinoids are fat-soluble, so binding is less efficient than with butter or coconut oil. Adding sunflower lecithin significantly improves absorption.

What You Need

  • Raw honey — 1 cup
  • Decarboxylated cannabis — 3.5–7g (direct method) or cannabis tincture (tincture method)
  • Sunflower lecithin — 1 teaspoon (recommended)
  • Double boiler or slow cooker
  • Fine mesh strainer or cheesecloth (direct method only)
  • Glass jar for storage

Method 1: Direct Infusion

  1. 01

Combine honey and decarbed cannabis in a double boiler

Use 3.5–7g per cup of honey. Add lecithin. Stir to combine.

  2. 02

Heat to 160°F for 40 minutes

Stir frequently. Do not exceed 185°F — high heat degrades both cannabinoids and honey's beneficial enzymes.

  3. 03

    Strain through fine mesh

Honey is thick, so straining takes patience. Press gently with a spoon to push honey through.

  4. 04

    Store in a glass jar

Honey is naturally antibacterial and shelf-stable. Store at room temperature away from direct sunlight.

Method 2: Tincture-Based (Recommended)

For higher potency and cleaner flavor, mix concentrated cannabis tincture directly into warm honey.

  1. 01

    Warm honey gently to 100–120°F

Just warm enough to thin the honey for mixing. A double boiler on the lowest setting works.

  2. 02

    Add tincture and stir thoroughly

Pour in your measured tincture dose. Stir for 2–3 minutes to distribute evenly.

  3. 03

    Let alcohol evaporate (optional)

Leave the jar slightly open in a well-ventilated area for 24 hours. The alcohol evaporates, leaving cannabinoids in the honey.

  4. 04

    Seal and store

Cap tightly and store at room temperature. Label with potency per tablespoon.

Dosage

Use our dosage calculator to determine potency. For the tincture method, the calculation is straightforward: if your tincture is 10 mg/ml and you add 20 ml to 1 cup (16 tablespoons) of honey, each tablespoon contains ~12.5 mg THC.

Uses

Troubleshooting

  • Weak effects: Honey is not a fat, so direct infusion is inherently less efficient. Switch to the tincture method for higher potency.
  • Cannabis taste is too strong: Use less cannabis in the direct method, or use QWET tincture (cleaner flavor) for the tincture method.
  • Honey crystallized: Normal for raw honey. Warm gently in a water bath to re-liquefy without damaging cannabinoids.

Frequently Asked Questions

How long does cannabis honey last?+
Honey is naturally antibacterial. Properly stored cannabis honey lasts 6–12 months at room temperature. The tincture method lasts longer because alcohol acts as an additional preservative.
Can I use any type of honey?+
Yes, but raw, unfiltered honey has the most health benefits. Avoid ultra-processed honey, which has been heated and stripped of enzymes.
Is the tincture method stronger than direct infusion?+
Generally yes. Alcohol extracts cannabinoids more efficiently than honey, so starting with a pre-made tincture gives you a more potent end product with better dosage control.
