The Endless Possibilities of CBD Honey

Imagine making cannabis-infused honey that would pretty much allow you to make anything that needs a little sweet an edible. After our first Whole 30 venture – many moons ago – we naturally gravitated toward avoiding sugar in many shapes and form. Though, we are not perfect and, sometimes, our sweet tooth kicks in.

We love honey as a staple ingredient for our pantry. Not only is it super simple to make, it’s even easier to use. Baking, beverage sweetener and even just a drop on the tongue. You can reap the benefits of CBD in the most delicious form – next to two scoops of sugar to help that medicine go down.

Some Ideas:

Now that we know how to make infused cannabis CBD make honey, we have some ideas. But first, when using buds, it’s okay to use less than you would if you were using trim as there will be more trichromes present and therefore more THC. If I was using buds instead of trim in this batch, I probably would have used 0.5 grams of bud per tablespoon of cannabinoid honey.

CBD PILLOW

Making cannabis infused honey is not very hard to do and its odorless once you get past the decarboxylation process.

Guidelines for dosing and storage:

We recommend using anywhere from 0.5-1.5 g of trim/bud/hash/etc per tablespoon of honey. If this is your first time experimenting with cannabis honey, try using 16 grams of cannabis to 2 cups of honey.

Once the honey infused with marijuana is done it can be stored and used whenever you feel like you want to add a little cannabis to your food.

Decarboxylate your CBD

We are going to decarboxylate our honey a little different than we did in our second part (coconut oil recipe). Decarboxylation is the process of heating cannabis to turn the CBDA (or, THCA,CBGA) to the active chemical CBD (or, THC, CBG) in the plant. Basically, we are converting the Acid, “A”, into it’s active ingredient for interact with our ECS (Endocannabinoid System).

Levo Oil Infuser

When you decarboxylate at a low temperature you are preserving the most terpenes, a.k.a. the oils in the plant that inform the flavor profiles of the cannabis as well as some of the addition health benefits.

Break out your baking sheet, as we are going to spend some time in the oven this time around. This process can work with any of the infused.

How to Make Infused Cannabis Honey

Learn how to make delicious and potent infused cannabis honey at home with our easy-to-follow recipe. Elevate your tea, toast, or even use it as a natural sweetener in your cooking with this simple guide.
Prep Time30 minutes
Cook Time3 hours
Course: Cannabis Weed Honey
Keyword: Cannabis Weed Honey
Servings: 1 Cup

Equipment

  • 1 Sheet pan and parchment
  • 1 Strainer or cheesecloth
  • 1 Funnel
  • 1 Bowl or large measuring cup
  • 1 Jar or bowl to store the coconut oil
  • 1 Weed Grinder
  • 1 Double-boiler, slow cooker, saucepan, etc.

Ingredients

  • 1/2 Cup Ground cannabis flower
  • 1 Cup Honey

Instructions

  • Preheat oven to 240°F. Place the cannabis on your baking sheet and spread evenly. If you have large flowers, break them by hand to smaller chunks.
  • Cover with parchment and place in oven for 35-45 minutes. Be sure to mix (or just shake the pan) every 10 minutes while it bakes.
  • Grind the cannabis to a medium/fine course. It's ok to use entire plant, just the flower, a little bit of both — this is all a matter of preference. Anything small enough to fit through the strainer will end up in your product so be careful grinding.
  • Combine the cannabis and honey in a double boiler to apply gentle heat on the stove top.
  • Add cannabis and simmer. Add in your coarsely ground cannabis product. Maintain low heat (between 160ºF and – never exceeding – 200ºF) and let the mixture simmer for 2 to 3 hours, stirring occasionally. Do not boil.
  • Strain and store the Honey. Set the funnel on top of a jar and line it with cheesecloth. Pour the honey (once cooled) over the cheesecloth funnel and allow it to strain freely. Take your time, honey is thicker than butter

Notes

Step 1 Note: When grinding, anything that fits through the cheesecloth will eventually end up the in product. Be extra careful not to grind too fine.
Step 5 Note: Be careful during the simmer, overcooking will destroy the cannabinoid.

I found your recipe after I tried another recipe for infusing honey – decarb the plant, wrap in cheesecloth and dangle in a jar of honey, which sits in a slow-cooker water bath. I let it go about 14 hours, and the honey is now like molasses (I had no idea that honey would cook down like this). I haven’t tried it yet to see whether it is tastes burnt. Have you ever tried this technique or had this experience? If so, I’d love to hear what you learned! I’m trying your recipe next – thank you!

      Hey Bird,

Yeah, this is a problem we have run into it. Heating honey accelerates the natural aging process (honey often darkens and crystalizes as it ages). Also, when getting too hot, the water evaporates off and causes it to thicken to a “fun” molasses. So you probably ran into the double “bango” there. We are looking into new ideas for direct infusion into honey since it’s not a fat (which is needed to properly extract). We see the industry moving towards: extracting to a tincture and then mixing in the honey — we are not apposed to this. When it comes to heating, we find success using a jar (to reduce water evaporation) and extremely low temperatures (to slow the aging process). Let us know!

I make FECO, once I cook off the alcohol, 1 cup tincture, I add 1/2c honey and warm and mix and it turned out great.

Hi I am currently making cannabis honey as I type this out and I am determined not to have to add any oil to it but everything I’ve read so far has stated to add coconut oil. I noticed your recipe does not include this and I am wondering how this affects the finished product in terms of potency

    1. bethehippy

Yeah, the science says you need a fat or an alcohol based “carrier” to extract the cannabinoids (THC, CBD). That’s why most recipes want you to infuse honey with a fat. We’ve done honey-only ourselves and it has worked, but we haven’t tested the final potency (it’s something we very much want to do). We tend to do honey with our shake, stems and lower quality cannabis for this reason. Best guess, mixing the honey while it’s cooking helps to incorporate the trichomes into the honey vs infusing (again, best guess. we are still researching why this one works for us).
We love testing all this stuff out, and hope you do too. Not every batch will come out as hoped, but that’s how we learn. Give it a go and let us know what you discover.
Side note – you could try creating a tincture and infusing the tincture. You’ll have more control over the potency, but we haven’t tried this ourselves.
Let us know and stay groovy out there.

    i just have a couple questions…
a cup of weed is approximately what in weight?
what measurement would be a good dose to start with?
so happy i found you! and thanks

    1. bethehippy

      Hey there Lisa,

      info
A cup of cannabis can weigh between 15 grams (half an ounce) to 20 grams (3/4 ounce) depending on how fresh and if you have nuggets or “shake.” I know, this always makes it a little hard to get a perfectly accurate dosage.

Check out our calculator to figure out a good amount based on your cannabis strength and mix amounts. To start, we like to Target 5 milligrams per dosage for edibles.

      recipe amounts
So, if your cannabis flower potency is 18% (about the average for cbd or thc dominate plants) and you use 3.5 grams (eighth ounce) of flower and extract into a cup of butter (or oil) you should get about 13 mg of cannabinoid per teaspoon. Plop half a teaspoon in your coffee or on some toast and you should be good.

Test at low doses, go slow and see what is right for your body.

Hope this helps and stay groovy!

      1. Matt

I’m trying to get an understanding comparitivley between honey and other extractions like alcohol, oil and butter. I see in this comment you say the calculation but then refer to oil or butter is it the same efficiency with honey?

any advice for mixing honey with cbd oils ?

I love the website, very informative and fulled with passion.
    keep up the good work.

    1. bethehippy

      Hey Azhar,

We thank you for the kind words!

No reason you can’t just mix in a little CBD hemp oil (or any tincture) into your honey to get your desired effect.

      Two things:
      1) I would use a double boiler at a low heat to help “liquify” the honey. This should ensure a consistent mix in the oil.
      2) You can get an idea of your potency by knowing your CBD amount (for example 150mg per tsp) a teaspoon of your oil with the amount total teaspoons of honey it will be mixed into (10 teaspoons of honey). You’ll know your mixture is around 15mg of CBD.
Not perfect science here, but should help get you to your desired benefits. As always, start low and go slow.
      Stay groovy!
